Pre-Surgical Education Class
Helping Residents of the Santa Clarita Valley Better Prepare for Procedures
The Joint Replacement and Spine Surgery Program at Henry Mayo Hospital features a dedicated orthopedic nurse navigator who guides patients through their surgical journey. This journey begins with the pre-surgery education class and continues upon admission to the hospital where the navigator will check in with you daily and be your advocate. Once you go home, the nurse navigator will check in with you via phone up to 3 months after discharge to monitor your recovery and address any questions or concerns you may have.
Class Information and Registration
Classes are conducted on campus at the Henry Mayo Education Center by the nurse navigator and last about 1.5 hours. You will receive informational handouts called clinical pathways specific to your surgery to reinforce what is taught in class. These classes will prepare you for the journey you are about to undertake and allow you to ask questions and have any concerns addressed prior to surgery. Henry Mayo offers classes for total joint replacements as well as spine procedures.
Class topics include:
- Understanding your procedure
- What to expect during your hospital stay
- Pain management
- Preventing complications
- Physical and occupational therapy
- Preparing for surgery
- Discharge plan
- How to care for yourself at home
