Jeannette Sharar Definitive Observation Unit
The Definitive Observation Unit (DOU) is for patients who are less critical than ICU patients and where patients who need very close observation are admitted. These patients may have just come out of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), may be pediatric patients, have cardiac problems, head injuries, or other health issues requiring frequent monitoring and observation by a nurse.
The ICU team will work with patients and their families to ensure a smooth transition and thorough understanding of the plan of care after the patient transfers to the DOU.
The DOU is staffed by a specialized, multidisciplinary team of health care professionals, including nurses who are specially trained to care for patients who have had cardiac procedures and pediatric trauma patients. All DOU nurses have specialty training in pediatric life support. Pediatric intensivist physicians are on call 24/7.
- The DOU is located on the second floor of the main hospital building.
- Semi-private rooms.
- Staffing in the DOU is a ratio of 1 nurse to 3 patients.
- Visiting hours are from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Special arrangements can be made for parents of pediatric patients. Two visitors at a time maximum.
- Waiting rooms are available in the lobby on the first floor or on the second floor by the Cardiac Cath Lab.
