Families in the Santa Clarita Valley are celebrating the news about the partial reopening of elementary schools for in person learning. However, many have concerns about how to ensure the safety of their children upon the return. Dr. Morris Yen, Chief of Pediatrics at Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital recently participated in the “It’s Your Health” podcast where he provided families with tips for a safe return to school.
Dr. Yen suggested that parents talk to children about what to expect prior to returning to school. Temperature checks, all-day mask wearing, no roaming around or sharing of supplies could be really hard for children to understand. He suggested a series of daily at-home activities that will engage children and educate children about all of the new changes and protocols required to keep them safe. Hand Hygiene, Masking, and Social Distancing (6ft apart) are the most important, but not always the easiest to implement especially with young children. Practicing all of these at home prior to the return to school will make a big difference in their willingness to cooperate and ability to follow the rules and stay safe.
