“Seasonal Allergies” to Heart Surgery: Brad’s Journey Back to Health

Brad Rosenfeld hadn’t been feeling well for a couple days. He thought it was seasonal allergies. He went to an urgent care clinic, where they told him he was experiencing heart attack symptoms and they were going to call an ambulance. Instead, his wife and son took him to the Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital Emergency Department. (Editor’s note: If you have heart attack symptoms it’s best to call 911).
After arriving at Henry Mayo Brad was quickly taken to Henry Mayo’s Roberta G. Veloz Cardiac Cath lab, where underwent a coronary angiogram by Henry Mayo’s cardiologist Jay Patel, MD, and the Cardiac Cath Lab team to determine the extent of the blockages in Bradley’s arteries. The angiogram revealed severe coronary artery disease.
Henry Mayo cardiothoracic surgeon Asmi Atiya, MD was then called in to consult with Brad, and together they decided Brad should undergo coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery, which he did the next day.
“It caught me completely off guard,” Brad said. “I wound up staying at Henry Mayo for two weeks.”
After discharge Brad enrolled in Henry Mayo’s Cardiac Rehabilitation program. The Cardiac Rehab staff “really knows their stuff,” Brad said. “They monitor your very closely – it’s a very hands-on program.”
“It was the first thing that helped me feel normal,” he said. “I really liked it.”
Today Brad is back at work and going to the gym a minimum of three times a week, mimicking the routines he learned from Henry Mayo’s Cardiac Rehab team, and also walking a good deal.
