At the Sheila R. Veloz Breast Center, we now offer an advanced technology option called Enhanced Breast Cancer Detection (EBCD) that helps make mammograms even better. This tool assists our doctors in finding the earliest signs of breast cancer, with improved accuracy and faster results.

How EBCD works

AI-Enhanced, Radiologist-Led Interpretation

• Post-exam analysis: After your mammogram is completed, the AI software analyzes the images and highlights areas that may warrant closer attention.
• Assisting the radiologist: These AI-generated markers help the radiologist spot subtle changes that can be difficult to detect with the eye alone.

How does EBCD work? 

EBCD uses AI software to analyze the images and highlight areas of suspicion, helping specialty-trained radiologists detect subtle lesions. Will EBCD affect my mammogram experience?

Will EBCD affect my mammogram experience?

There is no additional time, compression, or radiation. Your mammogram experience is the same, just with the added benefit of higher accuracy.

Why do I need to add EBCD if I'm having a 3D mammogram?

EBCD is an additional software that complements the reading of your 3D mammogram

Why do I need to add EBCD if I'm having a breast ultrasound?

Mammograms can detect changes in the breast tissue that ultrasound cannot see, such as calcifications and architectural distortion. 

Why is there an out-of-pocket cost for EBCD?

While EBCD is FDA-cleared, it is still very new and not yet covered by insurance. Similarly, when 3D mammography was introduced, it was also not covered by insurance. We are confident that insurance companies will cover this invaluable tool in the near future.

How often should I include EBCD with my mammogram?

It is recommended to include EBCD every year. EBCD increases your chances of finding breast cancer when it is very small and most treatable. 

I'm not sure if I'm comfortable with artificial intelligence

The Artificial Intelligence (AI) used on your mammogram is an advanced software tool. The AI software does not replace the radiologist. Our highly-trained breast radiologists interpret your exam and are responsible for the interpretation of your results.

How is my data shared and what is done with it?

The EBCD data becomes part of your personal mammogram history, which we protect the same as any other patient information

What to expect at your visit

• Check in at the Sheila R. Veloz Breast Center reception.
• A trained mammography technologist will perform your 3D mammogram.
• After your images are acquired, a board-certified breast radiologist reviews and reads the mammogram
• Then, EBCD review runs in the background and your radiologist reviews the combined findings.
• We will notify you and your referring provider with results as soon as the final read is complete.
