Practicing Mindfulness:

  • May 4, 11, 18, 25
  • 4:00 p.m.
  • Mindfulness is the awareness and acceptance of your thoughts, feelings, bodily
    sensations, and environment in the present moment. Mindfulness can promote overall
    health and well-being, and can:
    • Help reduce stress, anxiety and depression
    • Improve your sleep
    • Help manage chronic pain and disease
    • Improve your eating habits
    • Sharpen your focus and help you increase your productivity
    • Raise your self-esteem and help improve your relationships
    • Help you integrate breath and body movement
    Through a guided mindfulness meditation practice and brief discussion, we will explore
    various mindfulness practices that can be applied to your day-to-day life.

Nutrition to Boost Your Brain:

  • Research suggests we can support ongoing brain health with a healthy diet. Learn which foods give that extra boost to the human brain.

COPD Education:

  • JUST HOW SERIOUS IS COPD?
    HOW DOES IT AFFECT YOUR BODY?
    If you have been diagnosed with COPD, you can still be healthy. In other words, by understanding your disease, and taking charge of it on a daily basis, you can improve your quality of life with COPD. Henry Mayo Hospital has a 3 Part Educational Program that provides information and tools to help you understand COPD, manage treatment and improve your well-being.

HMFC Virtual Fitness Class:

  • May 6, 13, 20, 27
  • 3:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.
  • Join our Fitness Center staff for a virtual workout every Wednesday at 3PM. Our “Staying Fit” at-home exercise class is a full-body workout that can be done with minimal to no equipment. Our degreed and certified fitness professionals are here to get you moving! Disclaimer: Henry Mayo Fitness and Health (HMFH) strongly recommends that you consult with your physician before beginning any exercise program. Improving Balance and Preventing Falls:

  • Learn about the risk factors for falls, common household hazards, balance and the different body systems needed for proper functioning, and interventions to help improve balance and decrease fall risk.

Diabetes Self-Management Part 1: On the Road to Better Managing Your Diabetes

  • Begins May 7, 2020
  • 2:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.
  • In this class we will review the following topics:
    - Defined diabetes
    - Expel common myths
    - Discuss basic physiology of diabetes
    - Identify the signs of high and low blood sugar
    - Outline the basics of healthy eating
    You will finish this class with setting some personal goals.

Healing Circle:

  • 5:30 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.
  • Now more than ever, staying connected and coming together to support each other, our community and our world is vital. The Healing Circle, guides participants through special meditations to awaken healing for ourselves, those close to us and the world. Please join us in the Healing Circle live online via Zoom to send healing to everyone affected by the difficult circumstances we all are facing. Healing Circle will be offered every Thursday night at 5:30 p.m.

Gestational Diabetes :

  • 11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
  • In this class we will discuss the following:
    • What gestational diabetes is and potential complications
    • The glucose tolerance test and how it’s used to diagnose gestational diabetes
    • How following the right diet can help you manage your blood sugar levels
    • Self-glucose monitoring and its importance to pregnancy
    • Education to help decrease your risk of developing type 2 diabetes

Pneumonia Prevention, Treatment and Recovery:

  • Begins May 8, 2020
  • 1:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.
  • Pneumonia is the leading cause of hospitalization in children and adults. This class covers risk factors, causes, signs and symptoms of pneumonia, and how it is diagnosed. Pneumonia treatment, recovery and prevention are also discussed.

Fueling for Fitness:

  • Learn how to fuel yourself for quality workouts and achieve your weight goals, calculate your calories, recover nutritionally after a workout, and use apps to monitor your progress and stay on track.

Mindful Eating:

  • 2:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.
  • Learn about mindful eating, which is the practice of cultivating an awareness of our relationship with food and how it affects our bodies, our feelings and our minds. Join us to practice mindful eating techniques and learn skills to help you move away from a dieting mentality and toward a healthy relation-ship with food.

Heart Attack Prevention, Treatment and Recovery:

  • Begins May 12, 2020
  • 1:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.
  • This class will help those who have suffered a heart attack, or who suffer from angina, better understand the disease process and how to move forward to live a healthy, active life. A heart attack is a life-changing event. Learn about heart attack risk factors, how a heart attack is diagnosed and treated, and what you can do to prevent future heart attacks.

Neck and Back Education:

  • Do you have sciatica or pain in your neck or lower back? This class offers valuable information on how to take better care of your spine and, if you have pain, how to manage it so you can get back to the life you enjoy.

Type-Onederful Support Group:

  • Begins May 13, 2020
  • 4:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.
  • Meet others living with Type 1 diabetes who understand your struggles and frustrations with this disease. Family, caregivers and supporters of Type 1 diabetics are also welcome to join. Each session, we will cover new topics, relate to personal experiences and learn about ways you can tackle Type 1 diabetes
    head-on.

    - Challenges you may face to eating healthy

Aphasia Support Group

  • Begins May 14, 2020
  • 1:00 p.m.
  • Adults with aphasia, their family members and caregivers, and individuals with other communication difficulties are invited to attend our monthly support group meetings for guided conversation practice, educational sessions, and connecting with others. The Aphasia Support Group is led by Sarah Young, MS, CCC-SLP.

  • Many foods in the typical Western diet set the stage for inflammation, worsen aches and pains, and increase long-term risk of life-threatening diseases. In this class we will cover topics such as the dietary causes of inflammation, correcting an out-of-balance diet, avoiding inflammation triggers, and strategies to help you identify inflammation-causing foods.

  • Learn what causes common repetitive strain injuries, how to recognize symptoms before they become chronic and when to seek professional help.

Diabetes Self-Management Part 3: "Monitoring Your Blood Glucose" and "Continuing Your Journey With Diabetes"

  • In this class we will discuss the following:
    - The basics of Blood Glucose
    - Managing high and low blood glucose
    - Using your results
    - Blood glucose targets and monitoring your A1C
    - The natural course of diabetes

  • Heart failure affects about 6 million Americans is the No. 1 cause of hospitalization in people over 65 years old. Learn about the disease and risk factors, how heart disease affects the body, how it’s diagnosed and treated, what you can do to better manage the disease, and when to seek treatment.

  • Having a wound puts extra demands on your body. To heal, you need more nutrients. In this class you will learn strategies to help heal diabetic, vascular, surgical and pressure wounds. Class topics include foods that promote wound healing, which nutrients you may need to increase, lifestyle choices that may slow the healing process, and self-care to help prevent wounds.
