On the Road to Managing your Diabetes - The Basics
We will cover many of the basic concepts one needs to know about diabetes and managing diabetes. You will learn the definition of, as well as common myths and facts about diabetes. Participants will learn how to incorporate nutritional management and physical activities into their lifestyle.
Monitoring your Blood Glucose
We will define blood glucose and insulin and its effects on blood glucose. You will be able to identify the recommended blood glucose targets as well as work on personal targets. Strategies for dealing with challenging situations when monitoring blood glucose levels will be explored.
We will explore the effect food has on blood glucose levels, how feelings about food may influence your behavior and how the timing of meals has an impact on blood glucose levels. There will be discussions about how family, cultural, and religious practices can affect food choices and eating habits.
Continuing your Journey with Diabetes
We will focus on preventing, detecting and treating acute and chronic complications. The natural course of type 2 diabetes is discussed as well as the relationship of blood glucose levels on the long-term complications of diabetes. Long term complications are defined and discussed. Risk factors other than blood glucose levels for each long-term complication are identified.
