Heart Valve Surgery

During heart valve surgery at Henry Mayo our team of expert cardiothoracic surgeons repair or replace one or more valves in the heart.

By repairing the valve, surgeons are able to ‘mend’ the valve allowing it to function properly.  During valve repair, tissue may be cut, shortened, separated, or made stronger to help the valve open and close correctly.  Valve replacement consists of removing the diseased valve and replacing it with a prosthetic valve, which can be created from man-made materials or be harvested from the biological tissue of a donor.  Your surgeon will discuss with you the diagnostic findings, his or her plans for  surgical correction, and any other procedures you may need.

Aortic Aneurysm Repair

Aortic aneurysms occur when there is a damaged or weakened area of the vessel. Blood enters this damaged area, creating a “bulge” that is at great risk of bursting.  Depending on the location of this aneurysm, this condition may be life-threatening and require emergent surgical repair. During aneurysm repair, your surgeon will repair and reinforce the weakened area, thereby restoring normal function.
