Denise Bailey

Denise Bailey is no stranger to the world of medicine. She’s lived with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) for the past 15 years. So when she received a diagnosis of breast cancer in 2011 at age 49, she could not believe that she had that, too.

Denise was a few months late getting her mammogram that year. Her father had recently passed away. She was busy helping her son, Kevin, get ready for college in New York. A few days after her mammogram, the Sheila R. Veloz Breast Imaging Center (SRVBIC) informed her that a finding from her mammogram should be biopsied.

“I needed to get a biopsy fast because I was leaving to go with my son to New York,” Denise said.“ I got my results and my gynecologist told me they found a carcinoma. This hit me like a train. I sort of couldn’t believe that along with the MS, I now had this.”

Denise traveled with her son and daughter, Brittney, to New York, 10 days after the cancer diagnosis and flew back with her daughter to California where she underwent surgery--a lumpectomy, lymph node removal and 6 1/2 weeks of radiation treatment.

Six months later, Denise was in a lot of pain. She had complications from the radiation with severe tissue damage . In early 2013, she had a mastectomy and free tram flap reconstruction surgery.

“It has been a little over two years and I am still recovering from my surgery,” she said. “I am healing well and attribute my recovery to yoga, and swimming. This may be as good as I get, but I am cancer free and continuing to recover.”

During her treatment at SRVBIC, Denise said she always received top quality care and felt like she was part of a team. “They treated me like a queen. It felt like being a part of a family.”

A resident of Santa Clarita for most of her life, Denise said she feels like it was a blessing to be almost five minutes away from such a top notch medical facility. From her physicians, "Dr. Gregory Senofsky, who saved my life, Dr. Peter Ashjian, who put me back together, and Dr. Robert Zimmerman, my radiation doctor, and to the entire staff at SRVBIC. Everyone there was just amazing.”
