A convoy of pink fire trucks visited Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital on Tuesday, May 10, to show support for women affected by cancer and to help raise funds for the Sheila R. Veloz Breast Imaging Center's patient assistance fund.
"This is an opportunity to honor the women in our lives who have been affected by cancer," said Donna Ferguson, director of outpatient surgery services and the Sheila R. Veloz Breast Center at Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital. "By increasing awareness of cancer, we can hope to increase the number of lives saved as a result of early detection."
In addition to writing messages of hope on the pink fire trucks, attendees had the opportunity to purchase cupcakes, gift baskets, jewelry, t-shirts and other items, resulting in more than $700 raised to support the Sheila R. Veloz Breast Imaging Center's patient assistance fund, which covers the cost of mammograms for the uninsured and underinsured.
"We're very grateful to have this opportunity to raise funds to support the women of our community, and we thank the Pink Heals Tour for their support," said Diana Vose, president of the Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Health Foundation.
During the opening remarks, Sheri Clement, melanoma cancer survivor, encouraged women to place a priority on their health.
"We're often so busy taking care of our families, we neglect taking care of ourselves," said Clement. "As a survivor, my wish is that women will stop taking their health for granted. We can only take care of our families if we're healthy and alive."
The Pink Heals Tour, which began four years ago, started with $3,000 and an anonymous donor who helped Dave Graybill buy his first fire truck. The Guardians of the Ribbon" are firefighters, police officers and community leaders from around the country dedicated to the fight against all types of cancer affecting women. Since 2007 their pink fire trucks have traveled around the country encouraging communities, and particularly men, to support women's health, promote cancer awareness and honor cancer victims and their families.
