Med Surg > Who Needs Telemetry?

Generally people with cardiac or respiratory problems whose physicians feel they need this type of monitoring - these could be patients who have had heart attacks, or have undergone cardiac surgery, or have been admitted to the hospital with unexplained chest pain. Typically their conditions aren't serious enough to place them in our Intensive Care Unit (ICU) or Definitive Observation Unit (DOU) but they need closer monitoring and more frequent assessments than a patient placed in one of our Med/Surg Units. In addition, a patient in ICU or DOU whose condition improves, but who still needs cardiac monitoring, may also be put in a telemetry unit. In a case like this, you may hear a nurse or physician refer to telemetry as a "step down" unit. The admitting physician will decide what level of care a patient needs.
