A telemetry nurse will place three small "stickers" on the patient's chest, each attached to an electrode "lead." These leads are connected to a small monitor that the patient wears, either in the gown pocket or in a holder around the neck. The monitor enables patients who are physically able to walk around their hospital room or corridors. Unlike patients in the ICU unit, telemetry patients are not physically connected to large pieces of equipment.
Our nurses will also do frequent bedside assessments of telemetry patients for any changes in their conditions - typically every four hours. Although patients may find it annoying to be awakened during the night, this level of care is essential to their recovery.
Patients entering this unit are treated by their primary physicians in addition to other specialists, such as cardiologists and pulmonary specialists. A patient may also be sent off the floor for a procedure or tests, such as a stress test or echocardiogram.
We understand that when you or your family member is hospitalized, you may feel overwhelmed. We're all here to help you. Please feel free to talk to any member of your or your family member's care team about your questions or concerns.
