Asked to describe her professional journey; Diane Lynch, M.H.A., R.N., C.N.A. speaks to our interviewer about her unique path to Henry Mayo's top nursing job.
Even though I went on several different tracks throughout my life, my professional journey always came back to my passion for nursing. It all started when as a little girl. I loved playing with my Nancy Nurse Doll and enjoyed playing a nurse to my grandfather. My grandmother also had a big influence on me. When I was very young, she was in the hospital and she always said that the nurses who cared for her were the people who made a difference in her life. I got a lot of my passion for nursing from her.
As I got older, I became a candy striper and, to put myself through school, I became a Certified Nursing Assistant. I got my nursing diploma and completed my boards in New York. As a nurse, I worked part time while I did the mommy track. We moved a lot and so I got to work in a lot of different states in a lot of different hospitals.
But it wasn't until my children were in Junior High that I got my defining moment. I realized that I do have a passion for nursing and realized that I needed to go back to school. I got my bachelors degree in nursing and accepted a position in management. Then I had an opportunity to advance from a manager to a director; and moved to Valley Hospital. While there, I was director of two medical surgical units and within six months was promoted Director of Nursing. At that time, I went back and got my Master's in health administration and stayed there for nine years.
And then I realized there was a whole world of healthcare in nursing that I had no knowledge of because my practice had always been hospital-based. So I took another risk and went to work in physician practice management. I worked for Med-Partners for six years and fine tuned my case management skills and learned the life of managed care.
Then realized my true passion was nursing and went back to nursing and worked as the director of licensing and accreditation at Kaiser before returning to Henry Mayo. I started as a director of nursing and three months later was promoted to Chief Nursing Officer.
