In our Women's Unit, we want to provide our patients with a total family experience. Up to two other adults may be with the mother throughout labor and delivery - for example, the baby's dad and a doula, or even two close friends or other family members that the mom feels comfortable with. Once Mom has transferred to a postpartum room, she may have up to three visitors at a time. As long as it's medically sound, Mom can have her baby with her as much as she wants. We encourage moms to "Room In" with their babies to enhance the bonding process and support breast milk production.
In this family-centered spirit, we will soon be converting to "couplet care."* This means that one nurse - rather than two different nurses - delivers postpartum care to both you and your new baby. Your postpartum nurse (who may also be your labor and delivery nurse) is specially trained to assess both you and your new baby, help with breastfeeding, and provide a more seamless, unified approach to postnatal care.
