What Type of Care Do ICU Patients Receive?

All ICU Patients are continuously monitored for changes in heart, respiratron and blood pressure rate. Patients may also be on a ventilator (breathing machine). They may also have a chest tube and many other specialized devices such as catheters, feeding tubes and neurological monitoring equipment.

For families and friends of a patient in ICU, the amount of machines and monitors in the hospital room may be upsetting. Please do not hesitate to ask the patient's nurse, physician, or any of our staff about the equipment or other concerns you may have about the patient.

Although there's much technology involved in stabilizing an ICU patient, the time our ICU nurses spend assessing and observing patients plays the biggest role in providing positive outcomes. Our ICU nurses have a lesser patient assignment than nurses in our other units, allowing them to visit patients at least once an hour, and usually more frequently.

In addition, our interdisciplinary approach to patient care ensures that our unit's medical director, as well as a charge nurse, bedside nurse, respiration therapist, social worker, dietician, chaplain, discharge planner, and pharmacist contribute their expertise toward each patient's recovery.

We care not only about our patients, but their families, too. That's why we offer the following suggestions to help our patients' families and friends cope:
• Ask questions. You cannot ask us too many questions. We want you to understand fully everything we explain to you. Even if you ask the same question 100 times, we want you to ask.
• Ask for help. We cannot always anticipate the needs of our families. Even if we cannot directly help you, we can refer you to someone at this hospital who may be able to help.
• Take care of yourself. Keep yourself strong and healthy for your family member. Try to get eight hours sleep, eat regular meals, and ask for help from friends and family.
