What is Intensive Care

In hospitals, an intensive care unit (ICU) usually provides critically ill patients with the highest "level" of care. ICU patients typically receive the most intense level of monitoring, as well as most frequent assessments by nurses and other support staff. When a patient in ICU begins to recover and requires less intense care, he or she is usually placed in a definitive observation unit (DOU) or telemetry unit. These units may be referred to as "step down" units.
