Nurses and Staff Talk About ICU
Sheri Chessani, RN, ICU, "We nurses work well together as a team. Each of us is assigned to his or her own patients, but we're all involved in every case, because we're involved in the needs of the patients' families, too."
Dee Rickett, RN, Director, Critical Care, "When the patient's family comes in, they can expect not just to meet the nurse, but the many other people checking in on their family member - the dietician, social worker, other nurses, etc. That's because we're a highly functioning team."
Cynthia Hartman, RN, ICU, talks about a 74-year-old stroke victim who came to her unit in critical condition. "At the time he was admitted, we weren't sure of the outcome. Then three months after his stroke, he came back and said hello to us - walking, talking, alert, and oriented. It made me really teary. It's incredibly rewarding when patients come back to visit and you barely recognize them because they're well again."
Maria Guillen, Ward Clerk/Monitor Technician, ICU, "All the nurses here care so very much about the patients and their families. They know how to calmly talk to family members who are upset. Many patients write back and say that the nurses are always here when they're needed, that doctors are called as needed, and that we have a very nice, caring staff."
