Compassionate, Critical Care
At Henry Mayo, we deliver compassionate, highly skilled critical care to patients in our Intensive Care Unit (ICU). We also understand that the life-threatening, unexpected illness or injury of a loved one can be a stressful, traumatic experience for family members, who may feel overwhelmed with many troubling and complex issues.
Partnering with Families
That's why the goal of our nurses and interdisciplinary team is to be compassionate partners with a patient's family. Our staff encourages them to ask questions about their relative's condition, monitoring equipment, ICU procedures, or other concerns. Our staff will gladly do their best to answer their questions or refer them to a physician or another team member who can. We also encourage family members to take advantage of our support services, such as those provided by our chaplain, social workers, or financial counselors.
Our Interdisciplinary Approach
A critically ill patient's condition is often serious and complex. A patient's physical state, as well as his or her emotional, social, and spiritual needs, can change quite suddenly. Because these factors require constant attention, to deliver better patient care our ICU practices an interdisciplinary approach to patient care.
Our team meets every weekday, five times a week, to discuss how to best meet the needs of each ICU patient and his or her family. The team consists of our unit's medical director, charge nurse, the patient's bedside nurse, the respiratory therapist, social worker, dietician, chaplain, pharmacist and discharge planner/care worker.
Although the patient's families are not included in these meetings, we will gladly schedule upon request - or even recommend - a separate interdisciplinary meeting that includes families.
