Opened in 1975, when the Santa Clarita Valley's population was much smaller than today, Henry Mayo's Emergency Department (ED) was built to accommodate 18,000 patient visits a year. Due to the dramatic growth of the Valley's population over the past 29 years, however, that number has grown to more than 36,000 patient visits a year - twice the number the original facility was built to handle. Although eight new "fast track" treatment bays were added in 2002, the ED became unacceptably crowded when the number of patient visits exceeded 35,000. The community needs a new, greatly expanded and better-designed Emergency Department capable of handling a greater volume of patients with the full range of minor to critical degrees of illness and injury. The Need for a Cardiac Catheterization Lab More people in the United States require hospitalization for cardiology services than for any other reason. At Henry Mayo, cardiovascular patients utilize more hospital services than any other type of patient. Because the hospital does not currently offer cardiac catheterization - one of the most important procedures for diagnosing and treating cardiac illness - approximately 1,000 Santa Clarita Valley residents must travel outside of the community each year to obtain this important service. The new 2,500 square foot Cardiac Catheterization Lab will be staffed by two specially trained nurses, two invasive cardiology technicians and a nursing assistant. This team will work with Henry Mayo cardiologists in performing the latest diagnostic and emergency interventional procedures. THE CAMPAIGN FOR THE NEXT GENERATION OF CARE In order to raise a minimum of $12 million, the Board of Directors of the Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Health Foundation, with the help of other community volunteers, has launched The Campaign for the Next Generation of Care to approach area residents, businesses and foundations for philanthropic support. Gifts are being sought in the form of signed pledges payable over a period of up to three years. Pledge payments may be made through gifts of cash, stock and other securities or real estate and other real property that can be liquidated in the near term. Gifts are fully tax deductible as allowed by state and federal law. THE NEED FOR PHILANTHROPIC SUPPORT Across the nation, more and more community hospitals are depending on gift support to fund many of their building and equipment needs. Indeed, many industry experts observing this phenomenon have predicted that the communities that have access to the best health care in the future will be those that provide philanthropic support to their local hospitals.
