Often when patients in ICU get better, the next stop in their recovery is the DOU unit, a “step down” from ICU. In addition, some patients are also directly admitted into DOU. These may be victims of auto or other accidents, or patients with head injuries, neurological problems, heart conditions, or even serious infections. In all cases, the patient’s admitting physican determines what level of care he or she requires. Factors that help determine the doctor’s decision are the acuity of a patient’s condition, the hours of nursing care needed, and the type of treatments required.
