Definitive Observation Unit > What is Definitive Observation?

In hospitals, a definitive observation unit (DOU) usually provides patients with the second-highest "level" of care -- the highest being provided in the intensive care unit (ICU), which cares for the most critically ill patients. DOU units are sometimes called direct observation units and also may be referred to as "step down" units, as patients there need less intense care than those in ICU. However, DOU patients receive more intense observation and care than telemetry or med/surg patients.
