Cancer Registry
The first, and core of any cancer program is the cancer registry. This is the data gathering institution for all cancer statistics generated by cancer care at the hospital. It is responsible for recording and classifying in significant detail every cancer of a patient treated at the hospital, whether it is first diagnosed at the hospital or not. Cancer cases that are newly diagnosed and treated at the hospital are called analytic cases; those diagnosed and treated elsewhere, but then subsequently admitted to Henry Mayo are called non-analytic cases. In addition to this data gathering function, called abstracting, the registry is responsible for lifelong follow-up on a yearly basis of all patients with cancer that have been treated at the hospital.
Each year the Hospital’s Cancer Registry reports approximately 325 or more cases to the State of California. There are nearly 2,000 patients in Henry Mayo Cancer Registry's active database (patients diagnosed after 1/1/87), with an additional 3000 cases prior to that time. We keep in touch with patients throughout their lives. Information is taken from the patient’s medical record and entered into a special computer program. Strict procedures are in place to protect patient confidentiality.
