Cancer Conferences
The third part of the program is the cancer conferences. These are of two types. One is called the working tumor board, and consists of meetings of physicians and staff with the primary purpose of making treatment decisions and recommendations. Each patient's history, laboratory, radiology and pathology studies are examined by the group. Each bi-monthly working tumor board is attended by medical, surgical, and radiation oncologists, laboratory and pathology doctors, a radiologist, and often by other doctors involved in cancer care such as primary care doctors, a neurosurgeon and general surgeon. Another type of conference, the Monthly Tumor Board, is open to a broader audience in the hospital with both treatment decision and education as goals. The working tumor board typically reviews four to six cases each time.
