Acute Rehabilitation Unit
The Hope, Confidence and Treatment Needed to Face Change
At Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital, patients with orthopedic, neurological and complex medical conditions are served by our 19 bed Acute Rehabilitation Center. Known for a caring and progressive focus on rehabilitation, Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital's ARU is the place to heal. Our patients come to us for the hope, confidence and treatment needed to face changes in their lives.
Rehabilitation Plan of Care
The word rehabilitation means "to make able." The goal of rehabilitation is to help the person become as independent as possible. During the first few days in our care, our interdisciplinary team will meet with each patient and study their individual needs. From that point, the patient becomes the center of focus. Once needs are determined, a personalized rehabilitation plan of care is put in place.
All patients are required to participate in therapy for a minimum of three hours each day. Activities are broken down into 30-60 minute sessions and may include, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy either individually or in a group setting.
Nursing care, support from psychology, respiratory, dietary and social services along with team and family conferences are also part of the plan.
In their final steps as they prepare to leave the hospital, patients are taken on a field trip where they learn to maneuver over sidewalks and through shopping centers and are given exercises simulating everyday living experiences.
Our care doesn’t stop after you leave. If needed, patients will receive a home safety evaluation where specially trained staff will evaluate and suggest improvements needed in the home to provide a safer and more accessible home environment.
A Caring and Compassionate Team
We view our program as an important step in the plan of care, facilitated through an interdisciplinary team approach and designed to help enable you to return to your own environment as quickly as possible. Our team meets weekly, assesses current progress, problem-solves and establishes new goals for each patient.
Designed for Acute Rehabilitation
The center's physical structure is special in that it was originally conceived as a rehabilitation facility. As a result, every aspect of the center has been specially designed for rehabilitation. The patient rooms are adjacent to the therapy areas and two gymnasiums designed for physical therapy and occupational therapy.
In addition, the center features activities of daily living (ADL) that simulate a home environment, complete with a full kitchen and dining area allowing patients to practice their newly learned skills. Outdoor skills such as gardening are also practiced.
Social dining is encouraged on a daily basis. Patients can come together for two to three meals each day to socialize with other patients, family members and friends. Nursing staff or therapists supervise meals and help with feeding and swallowing if needed. To learn more about this program, please contact 661/253-8992.
