Determining the Cause of Disease
Pathology is the branch of medical science that studies the causes, nature and effects of disease. At Henry Mayo, we do that through careful inspection and analysis of tissue and fluid specimens. In the last inspection by the College of American Pathologists, this service was accredited with distinction, an honor reserved for the top 1% of pathology services across the nation.

Excellence to Ensure Accuracy
Pathology at Henry Mayo is far superior to what you will find at a typical community hospital. All physicians in the department are board-certified, and have established links to academic medicine, a hands-on approach to patient care, and outreach to the community in the form of lectures, not-for-profit service and teaching.

Surgical Pathology
Any tissue removed during surgery is sent to this department for evaluation. After a visual (macroscopic) inspection, the pathologist evaluates samples under a microscope. Any abnormalities such as those caused by malignancies, inflammation or autoimmune diseases are reported promptly to a patient's physician.

Cytopathology
Primarily used to find the presence or absence of cancer and other abnormal cells, cytopathology encompasses a variety of procedures that are non-surgical and minimally invasive. The pathologists at Henry Mayo are experts in Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA), used as a diagnostic tool when a "lump" or swelling is felt under the skin or discovered radiologically.

Aspiration Biopsy Service
Henry Mayo is a rarity among community hospitals, operating a dedicated walk-in Aspiration Biopsy Center Service where patients are personally evaluated by a board-certified cytopathologist.
