Bone Density Diagnostics

For patient convenience mammography and bone density exams may be scheduled on the same day.
In keeping with Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital's mission to improve the health of our community, we are offering the latest bone density diagnostic technologies to benefit the physicians of our community as well as their patients.

Bone loss in women tends to begin at age 35 and the incidence of osteoporosis is expected to double by 2020. One-third to onehalf of postmenopausal women are affected by osteoporosis. This means 45,000 women in the Santa Clarita Valley will benefit from a bone density screening.

All women 50 years and older should schedule a comprehensive skeletal scan for possible bone loss. With the decline of HRT postmenopausal women are at a higher risk than ever.

The hospital has the GE Lunar Prodigy, a tool that measures bone mineral density, including dual hip and spine as well as peripheral sites including the wrist, forearm and heel. It is a comprehensive tool for accurate diagnostic studies of the scanned anatomy. Most insurance companies reimburse for this exam and Medicare generally pays for this test every two years, or annually under certain treatment circumstances.

The other tool that is being offered is the Lunar Achilles bone ultrasonometer. The Achilles is an accurate screening tool which utilizes ultrasound scanning of the heel and delivers results that indicate an overall fracture risk.
