Definitive Observation Unit > What Should Patients Expect?

Patients entering this unit are treated by their primary physicians in addition to other specialists, such as neurologists and cardiologists. In addition, a patient may be sent off the floor for a procedure or tests, such as an MRI or echocardiogram.

Our critical care nurses will do frequent bedside assessments of patients for any changes in their condition - typically every four hours. Although patients may find it annoying to be awakened during the night, this level of care is essential to their recovery

Depending upon a patient's condition, he or she may be hooked up to telemetry equipment that monitors heart rate, rhythm, and electrocardiogram (EKG). If a patient is is receiving oxygen and/or tube feedings, a respiratory therapist and/or dietician, respectively, will also be involved in their care.

We understand that when you or your family member is hospitalized, you may feel overwhelmed. We're all here to help you. Please feel free to talk to any member of your or your family member's care team about your questions or concerns.
