Definitive Observation Unit (DOU): A Patient's Guide
Our Definitive Observation Unit is often the next stop for patients in our Intensive Care Unit (ICU) who have begun to get well but still need critical care and rigorous monitoring. At Henry Mayo, our DOU is located adjacent to our ICU. This proximity, together with communication and teamwork between both units, ensures patients who transfer to DOU a seamless transition. (Patients with acute conditions who need this level of care may also be directly admitted into DOU.)
Because patients need appropriate care for every stage of their recovery, our DOU nurses have advanced clinical competencies. These special skills enable them to provide the high level of care that these patients require and to respond quickly to their urgent medical needs.
Our DOU nurses also understand that patients in this unit and their families have many concerns. That's why they strive to treat the whole patient. They will gladly refer patients to any additional services they may need, including those provided by our chaplain, social workers, or financial counselors. Their goal is to be compassionate partners in their patients' recoveries. Together with our physicians and interdisciplinary team, they offer the tender loving care, education, and support that patients and their families need during difficult times.
Location & Visiting Hours
Henry Mayo's DOU is located on the second floor of the Main Hospital Building. Visiting hours in DOU are 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Please limit the number of guests in the room to two at a time.
